Admissions Fact of Fiction

As Counselors, there a number of things you hear that students take as gospel. Some of these things are true and others not so much. AIE.org has published a few admissions statements that are Facts or Fiction? One is a fact and the other 3 are fiction. Do you know which statement is true? Review each statement and then scroll down to see which 1 is fact and which 3 are fiction.

  1. You have to decide on a major before you enroll in college.
  2. Most schools base admission only on SAT or ACT scores.
  3. It’s a good idea to apply to more than one college.
  4. If you don’t apply before January of your senior year in high school, you probably won’t be accepted anywhere.

  1. You have to decide on a major before you can enroll in college. Fact or Fiction?
    Fiction. Colleges and universities don’t require students to declare a major prior to arriving on campus.
  2. Most schools base admission only on SAT or ACT scores. Fact or Fiction?
    Fiction.  Most schools base their decisions on many things, including grades, test scores, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and more.
  3. It’s a good idea to apply to more than one college. Fact or Fiction?
    Fact. Most admissions professionals recommend students apply to three or more schools. That way, the student has a better chance of being accepted to at least one of their preferred schools.
  4. If you don’t apply before January of your senior year in high school, you probably won’t be accepted anywhere. Fact or Fiction?
    Fiction. Many schools will accept applications through March before the next fall semester, and some will admit students up to the beginning of a semester or term.
