Alleged FAFSA scam – Parents and Students charged to fill out the FAFSA

The Consumer Federal Protection Bureau recently sued Global Financial Support Inc. for allegedly marketing and charging families for financial aid services they could get for free.

Thousands of families were apparently misled into paying this company to help them complete the FAFSA and other forms that are available free. Here is the release from the CFPB – Student Financial Aid Scam

Some of the company names used to mislead families included the Student Financial Research Center as well as the College Financial Advisory. They were mailing solicitations to students and their parents.

It’s a reminder to make sure that parents are informed not only about when they need to complete the FAFSA but that it is also free and there is no need to pay a company a fee to complete it for them.
