College Textbook Prices Have Risen 1,041 Percent Since 1977

NBC News published a story on the rising costs of College Textbooks. They found since 1977 prices have risen more than 1,041 percent. They compare the textbook industry to the pharmaceutical industry where companies lobby to have their product accepted and then set pricing once it is required rather than through supply and demand. Some of the suggestions they give for students to consider are to rent textbooks, buy used textbooks, or using free “open source” textbooks. This is another item that Counselors should discuss with students and parents before the student graduates high school.
